Michael van Gerwen picked up his fifth tournament win of 2018 so far as he completed a Players Championship double in Barnsley.
The World number one was dominant once again in Barnsley on the back of his win at the first Players Championship win yesterday, his opponent in Sunday’s final was the talented Australian Corey Cadby who reached his second final in 2018 with a string of superb performances.
On Sunday, Van Gerwen’s route to the final wasn’t all straight forward, he was embroiled in a couple of last-leg deciders. In the last 32, Van Gerwen edged out Ryan Searle 6-5 as he dominated the deciding leg, but in his last 16 match with Luke Woodhouse, Van Gerwen had to survive three match darts to progress to the last eight.
In the Quarter-Finals, Van Gerwen faced Adrian Lewis in what was an extraordinary performance from the World no.1, it had everything. Van Gerwen missed D12 for a nine-dart leg in just the third leg, the Dutchman cruised to a 6-2 victory with a 110 average, but he was averaging in excess of 120 after six legs in what was a very impressive display from the Worlds best player.
In the Semi-Finals, the Green machine came up against an unlikely opponent in Simon Stevenson. And, despite only averaging 85 (his lowest average of the weekend) he cruised to a 6-2 victory as he booked his place in his second final of the weekend.
His opponent of course was the Australian Corey Cadby, it was the pairs first meeting, and there plenty of comradery between the two players. The final didn’t quite live up to It’s billing as Van Gerwen moved into a 4-0 lead, Cadby did get a leg on the board as he pilied in a 15-dart leg. However, Van Gerwen finished off the job with a pair of 13-dart legs to clinch his fifth title of the year.
