Jeffrey de Zwaan claimed his first PDC ranking title on Sunday afternoon in Wigan as he battled through an incredible run of players to pick up the £10,000 prize. The ‘Black Cobra’ edged out Jonny Clayton 6-5 who was in search of his second PDC title in seven days.
De Zwaan battled back from 5-4 behind to edge past the Welshman in what was a superb final. This was De Zwaan’s third PDC final in 2018 already, and he’s been showing a lot of prominence this year. He defeated Michael van Gerwen 10-8 at the UK Open back in march, and of course those two finals in which he lost out to Gary Anderson in both of them.
To his own admission, he acknowledges that he didn’t really play his best stuff in those finals, and he wanted to put that right.
En route to the final in Wigan, De Zwaan enjoyed successes over the likes of Zoran Lerchbacher (6-4), Michael Smith (6-5) in which he missed D12 for a nine-darter. Justin Pipe (6-2), Steve Beaton (6-3), James Wilson (6-3) & Gabriel Clemens (6-3).
With that title to his name, De Zwaan is flying up the PDC rankings. He had to start from scratch in 2018 as he earned his tour card in January. He’s already almost secured his tour card for the next two years, and with it he’s opened a lot of doors for potential TV tournament appearances.
