Mervyn King claimed his first PDC ranking title for four years as he scooped the £10,000 prize at Players Championship 15 in Barnsley on Tuesday afternoon.
‘The King’ seen off James Wade 6-2 in the final as he saved his best performance for the final. King averaged 105.2 in the final capping off a consistent day for the 52-year old.
King opened up the final with a stunning 127 finish to get things underway. Wade then replied with a 126 finish of his own to level up the contest. King then stepped it up a gear or two as he piled in back-to-back 15-dart legs to move into a 3-1 lead.
Wade did respond with a 13-darter to reduce the arrears to 3-2. But, King provided a trio of superb legs as he went out in 15, 12 & 13 darts to complete a fantastic 6-2 victory over ‘The Machine’.
En route to the final, King produced some consistent performances to see off the likes of Simon Preston 6-2 (86.0), Matthew Edgar 6-2 (96.8), Rowby-John Rodriguez 6-3 (86.8), Robert Marijanovic 6-3 (100.8), Ian White 6-4 (92.8) & Mark Webster 6-3 (92.6).
King has been for years now one of the biggest unsung heroes on the tour, he’s a consistent last 16 / Quarter-Finalist on both the Pro Tour and the European Tour, and despite it being four years since his last PDC ranking title, It’s been long overdue.
