Leonard Gates produced some breathtaking displays on Satirday afternoon in Ohio as he claimed event no.3 of the Championship Darts Circuit main event tour. Gates has been in some great form on the CDC Circuit over the past 18 months or so, and he showed us all what he’s capable of as he defeated some of the best names in North American darts.
In the final, Gates edged past DJ Sayre in a fantastic final which went the distance.
Gates pulled out a clean 76 finish to take the deciding leg, but what a match it was. Sayre had the momentum in the early stages as he raced into a 4-1 lead, but credit to Gates for a fantastic fightback to take five out of the last six legs to win the title with a 14-darter. In the penultimate leg of the match, Gates fired in a stunning 156 finish to force a deciding leg as Sayre was poised on a two-dart finish for the title.
Gates chats with Anthony Eugenia of the CDC following his victory over DJ Sayre in the final.
En route to claiming event 3, Gates had to see ff some great names along the way. He kicked off the event with back-to-back whitewash victories over Patrick McGinnis & Neil Quenon. But, from then on in, Gates really had to step it up as he raised his game immensely. In the last 16 he made light work of David Fatum in what was a 5-1 victory for Gates as he averaged 94.5.
Then, it didn’t get any easier as he came up against Larry Butler in the last eight, Gates made light work of the ‘Eagle’ as he enjoyed a very assuring 6-1 victory the 1994 World Matchplay champion. In the Semi-Finals, Gates was embroiled in a superb match with Ross Snook as Gates had to overturn a 3-2 deficit as he won four legs without reply to book his place in the final with DJ Sayre.
It was a superb run from Gates who’ll be looking to take that form into event no.4.
