Leonard Gates was in some sensational form on Saturday evening in Burlington, Ontario as he claimed CDC Main Event 5 – The A-Z Darts Northern Lights spectacular.
The success was Gates’ fourth CDC title as he was looking to fly up the CDC leaderboard with the race for the William Hill PDC World Darts Championship spot up for grabs after the 10 CDC Main Tour events.
Gates was superb throughout the course of the events with consistent averages in the mid-to-high 90’s. His overall average for the event was an impressive 92.76.
In the final, he faced Darin Young who himself has several CDC titles to his name. Gates got off to a perfect start as he raced into a 5-0 lead, producing some great legs en route.
Gates was solid in his play, and after the first 3 legs, he really did up the ante. He fired in legs of 14 & 13 darts back-to-back as he moved five legs to the good. Young started a potential fightback as he piled in a 17-darter to get his first leg on the board.
But, Gates claimed the title with a 17-dart leg of his own to complete a convincing 6-1 victory as he became the second most successful player on the CDC Tour behind Larry Butler.
En route to winning the final, Gates enjoyed a string of five-star performances with some great averages. He defeated the likes of Barry Peer 5-0 (83.5), John Steinhofer 5-1 (93.7), Nick Linberg 5-0 (103.0), Chuck Puleo 6-2 (95.4) & Gary Mawson 6-3 (88.9)
As for Young, his Semi-Final victory was the stand out match of the event for me. Fatum played some superb stuff, Fatum took the first leg, and he had left tops to double that lead, only for Young to pile in a superb 102 finish which was the first of several ton plus finishes over the course of the match.
Fatum regained the lead with a solid 14-darter, as you’d expect Young came fighting back. At this stage there was no seperating the pair. But, the turning point of the match came in leg 7. With the match levelled at 3-3, Young fired in a stunning 121 finish to break the Fatum throw as he moved 4-3 ahead with the darts in leg eight.
Young used that to his advantage as he moved 5-3 ahead. But, Fatum wasn’t done just yet as he produced some World-Class stuff to take out a mind-boggling 142 finish for a 12-darter to reduce the arrears to 5-4.
Young managed to see the match out in the very next leg to complete a 6-4 victory in what was a superb battle.
